Trip Report - first timers on St. Croix

Apr 11, 2017, 7:33 AM

RESTAURANTS WE VISITED (NOT IN ANY PARTICULAR ORDER)

GALANGAL: Outstanding Dinner AND service AND wine selection. We started with the galangal soup (best we’ve had), followed by Green Curry, Lamb and steak. Every dish was fantastic, beautifully presented and great portions. By far our favourite meal on the island ***** (5 star)

WAVES AT CANE BAY: The night we were there was the chef’s brand new menu, not sure if that’s why we just didn’t love the food. As a matter of fact we all apps/entrees off the special menu and it was just ok that I can’t remember exactly what we had. The view (go at sunset) was the best part of this restaurant. We were seated down at 1 of the 2 tables right at the rocks. Other disappointment was they did not have any fresh lobsters down in the live lobster pool (sure not there fault but still a bit let down) We wanted to love this place based on lots of reviews but I’ll give it a 3 out of 5 star *** (3 star)

ZION: OMG! Can’t say enough about the food and service at this place. The courtyard dining is just magical. The food outstanding, the service incredible and the “house infused” drinks are awesome. Thanks to Mary’s husband Zach who works at UN Amore (review on that below) for the recommendation to eat here. We had the tuna special (so fresh, so good), the rack of lamb (husband was not only blown away by the flavour but the portion 8!!) and the pork tenderloin. From entrees to dessert (which we HAD to take back to villa) top notch!! ***** (5 star)

THE BOMBAY CLUB: Good food..not great..and the owner (or one of) was a bit grumpy towards us. Our waitress however made up for him. Entrees steak & fish were good. .big portions..overpriced. The “tunnel” to get in to the restaurant is very cool ***/* (3.5 stars)

UN AMORE: From start to finish this place was excellent! Our hostess was the sweetest! Got to love a place where you get to talk to the staff from the hostess to the waiter to the bartender! Zach our waiter was fantastic in his beer recommendation to me (coffee infused beer who knew!) We did not try the pizza but had pasta dishes, spaghetti and meatballs my son raved about. Great food served with great service! ****/* (4.5 stars)

CASTAWAYS: Great atmosphere. Great burgers/wings. We were there a night that Steve Katz was playing, enjoyed his guitar playing. Jenga and pool table fun time! **** (4 stars)

40 STRAND: Again, great food. Huge portions..appetizer (cool pizza app) was so big I ended up cancelling my entree…wicked take on Mac n Cheese husband and son loved. Our waitress also works at TOAST. Great drinks ****/* (4.5 stars)

GALLEON: Still not sure about Galleon. Service was great…drinks great…location great…food just ok. The lobster bisque was very good..rest of meal (chefs fish selection, The Galleon and NY strip) were good..way better places than here on the island *** (3 stars)

TURTLES DELI: ***** (5 star) SANDWICHES! That’s all we got to say!! Visit see for yourself

ACE ROTI - ***** (5 star) ROTI - tried to make it back for another lunch but never did…sweet woman running the show, loved it

TOAST: **** (4 star) breakfast 2 times here. Build your own bloody mary’s! YUMMY First time having Arepas (very good). biscuit and gravy, and basic breakfast menu Great enough we went twice for breakfast **** (4 star)

ROWDY JOE’S: **** (4 star) - went for lunch 2 times here…both times great food and good drinks…play the “hook” game on the porch pretty fun.

SHUPE’S : **** (4 star) - went for lunch/drinks 2 here…son loved there burgers. Bar tender (mike) was fun and told us about Cruzan Hooks and the original place Sonya Ltd. to buy them. Thanks Mike from the Mass-holes! LOL We love our “hooks”

DEEP END BAR AND GRILL: *** (3 star) - 2 times for basic breakfasts

NIDULARI : ***** (5 star) - happened upon Nidulari in the rain forest on a Wednesday when she was open (2pm-6pm). Fresh (still warm) bread was awesome! The vegan peanut butter cookies to die for (who knew vegan could be so good LOL)

THAT’S IT FOR THE RESTAURANTS WE WENT TO! (LOL)

BELINDA CHARTERS: https://www.sailbilinda.com/

We sailed a full day with Captain Dee and first mate David. We couldn't have asked for a better day on the water and aboard the beautiful Zulu!

Captain Dee is a delight to sail with, a true professional and a whole lot of fun! The snorkeling was amazing with first mate David. We never felt rushed! Her knowledge of the waters of the St. Croix can't be found in any book/review/or brochure!

We absolutely loved her private mooring where we moored up in a private cove for some of the best snorkeling we did all week, not to mention the BEST homemade lunch she served. (I need her rice recipe LOL)

We highly recommend if you’re thinking of spending a day on the beautiful waters of St. Croix you go with Captain Dee!!

Can't wait to go back in July for another great day with Captain!!

BUSH TRIBE ECO TOURS: http://www.bushtribe.com/index.html

What a great night for the coolest thing ever. Awesome kayak trip for the bioluminescence trip. Chris and JD couldn’t have been more professional and super fun! They’re knowledge of this phenom is bar none! Something everyone should try to experience (if the moon is in the correct phase)

DIVING: First time divers, we went with Dive Experience, please see our lengthy review on them!

BEACHES:

We love to snorkel and tried lots of beaches on the island (never left the villa without our gear just in case a beach looked good for snorkeling) We enjoyed Shoy’s, not much to see as far as snorkeling goes but a cool beach that you walk thru the “grape tree tunnel” to get to. We were lucky enough to be able to visit Sandy Point (before they close for turtle nesting season) beautiful beach. Snorkeled the Pier in Frederiksted beautiful, we entered (jumped) into the water on the right hand side if you’re looking down the pier on the advice of some locals don’t jump in on the left lots of debris from a storm. Hit rainbow beach on a Sunday afternoon lots of locals and nice beach. Cane Bay beach is beautiful. By far favorite beach for both snorkeling and beauty was Isaacs Bay, it’s a hike.
